4 Day Sprouts (Sunflower & Wheat)
For sprouting sunflowers I recommend:
- 2 2/3 cups per 64 oz container (I've used the Gladware Deep Dish)
- Soak for 2 hours
- Rinse twice a day
- Rinse just before feeding
- 4 days including the initial soak
For sprouting wheat, it is is very much the same as the sunflowers, only a longer soak time, about 6-8 hours, but only 2 cups of wheat, since wheat has a greater increase (about 3x in the 4 days).
For wheat it is important to have the best sprout rate possible. The reason for this is that any seeds that do not sprout will ferment. Rabbits' digestive systems do not handle fermented grains well (I've had 2 rabbits end up "off feed" when doing seed tests). If you do not have any ruminant animals that can handle fermented grains I recommend finding sources that will allow you to purchase smaller amounts that you can test before buying large 50+lb quantities. I also recommend avoiding "livestock" feed seed. I have been told that the livestock feed is often heat treated, which affects germination. When I attempted to sprout an organic livestock feed wheat I got maybe 50% sprout (on good days), the rest fermented very quickly.
6 Day Wheat Fodder
The process for reaching full fodder will vary from location to location. You want about 1/3 of the seed in each container as you would put in for just sprouts (about 2/3 cup for a 64oz Deep Dish style container). I am able to simply continue from the 4 day sprouts with rinsing twice a day. Temperature will want to stay as cool as possible without being cold enough to halt the growth, the warmer the temperature the more likely you are to develop mold.
